Hanalei Bay is the North Shore's signature beach -- a two-mile crescent backed by mountains, generally calm for swimming outside winter surf season. Anini Beach has one of Kauai's longest reef-protected lagoons, making it a popular pick for families with young kids. Hideaways Beach is a smaller, quieter cove reached by a short trail from Princeville, popular with snorkelers on calm days. Kīlauea Point's historic lighthouse is one of the best spots on the island to see nesting seabirds.

Hanalei town, about ten minutes further, has the North Shore's best concentration of restaurants, from food trucks to sit-down dinners. The Hanalei farmers market is worth timing a visit around for local produce.

Hanalei Bay is the easiest place on the North Shore to book a surf lesson, with several local instructors working right off the beach. Kayak tours run up the calm, mountain-backed Hanalei River -- a good option for a mixed-age group. Nā Pali Coast boat tours are the most dramatic way to see Kauai's famous coastline, typically departing from Hanalei in summer when the water's calmer.

Princeville Center covers gas and everyday essentials nearby. For anything beyond routine care, the island's main hospital is in Līhuʻe. North Shore weather changes quickly, so it's worth checking the forecast the morning of any beach or hiking day rather than the night before.
